Lasik Referrals

LASIK, a type of refractive surgery, is a procedure used to treat various vision problems. If you’re suffering from myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism, you could potentially qualify for LASIK. This refractive procedure involves creating a flap in the cornea and reshaping it to correct the vision.

To see if you are a good candidate for LASIK, a thorough evaluation of your eye is required. During your eye exam, Dr. Chan will speak with you about your options and work with you to make a well-informed decision on whether this is right for you.

There are many different factors to consider before choosing LASIK, including your eye health and prescription. LASIK is most successful if your prescription is moderate and has not worsened. Our optometrist must also give you a clean bill of ocular health before you can be referred for elective procedures like LASIK.

What Is Lasik?

REFRACTIVE SURGERY

LASIK is a microscopic, out-patient procedure that corrects your vision. There is a clear dome in the eye called the cornea, which sits over the iris (the colored part of your eye). The cornea focuses light rays or images into the back of your eyes for clear vision. When the eye cannot focus on an image, glasses and contacts can help correct the focus.

With LASIK, your prescription is lasered onto your cornea. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a flap in the cornea that preserves the very delicate epithelium layer of skin on the surface. Then the flap is raised and the laser reshapes your cornea (essentially your prescription is lasered on). The flap is repositioned and your vision is corrected.

You may have heard about a procedure called PRK that is similar to LASIK. With PRK, there is no flap; instead, your prescription is lasered on top of your cornea. This procedure will also provide clear vision, but the recovery time may be a few days longer as the delicate epithelium layer has to regrow on the cornea.
